1924 Raleigh 2¾hp Model 5
Registration no. PW 2294
Frame no. 10751
Engine no. 9355
Britain's best-known bicycle maker, Raleigh also manufactured motorcycles from 1899 to 1905, and from 1919 to 1933. More recently, the Nottingham company offered a range of mopeds plus a scooter in the late 1950s/1960s. During the 1920s Raleigh's line-up expanded to include machines of various capacities, both sidevalve and overhead-valve engined, ranging from a 175cc unitary construction lightweight to a hefty 998cc v-twin. One of the mainstays was the 350cc, 2¾hp model, a compact sidevalve-engined lightweight that, while not devastatingly fast 'flat out', accelerated smartly and handled well by the standards of its day.
A typical example of a Vintage-era Raleigh, this Model 5 is powered by a 348cc single-cylinder sidevalve engine driving via a three-speed Sturmey-Archer gearbox and chain final drive, and would have set you back £50 when new. In daily use by the last owner up to the end of May 1962, 'PW 2294' was purchased by the current vendor in Nottingham in September 1967 and since then has been taken to a few rallies but not used on the road. The machine incorporates a number of modifications and additions including 'sportier' handlebars, Lycette-type saddle, pillion footrests, 'bum' pad, Klaxon horn and acetylene lighting. Described by the private vendor as in generally good condition, it is offered with purchase receipt, instruction manuals, old-style logbook, Swansea V5 and parts of the old bulb horn.
