Footnotes

  • Provenance:
Purchased from Donald Ellis Gallery, Dundas, Ontario, October, 1999: "The practice of attaching model head canoes to clan hats can be seen in an example at the Burke Museum, Seattle, Washington, and in a vintage photograph by Winter and Pond taken in their shop in Juneau, Alaska ca. 1900. See Images From the Inside Passage, Wyatt, University of Washington Press, 1989, pg. 26"; Earl Duncan, Phoenix Gallery, Denver, CO

Old model of a "head canoe", an early design that went out of style at the beginning of the 19th century. The model is mid- to late 19th century, and may have been part of something else, as it is much too short and flat bottomed. However it shows the characteristics of a head canoe. The painting is very abstract and fairly rough, but pretty traditional.
