Footnotes

  • Provenance:
Purchased from Donald Ellis Gallery, Dundas, Ontario, January 1997, said to be from the Edenshaw family, Queen Charlotte Islands, BC

This box, possibly of Bella Bella or Tsimshian origin, has a much better painting than (the other lidded box in the collection), although it is unusual in having both principle sides almost identical to one another. The only real difference is in the upper corners, where one side has single U's compared to the double U's on the other. The formlines are of a very narrow style and are quite expertly painted. As with the other box, I can't see painting on the lateral sides. Ordinarily there would be an asymmetrical painting, often in true-line outline oriented in one direction, on these two sides. Both boxes have some loss to the upper edge, possible to refit the lid after mouse damage!
