1801 $10 AU58 NGC
BD-2, R.2. An impressive example having frosty motifs. The fields are variously satiny (on the obverse) and partially reflective (on the reverse). Greenish-gold surfaces indicate that the gold was likely alloyed with silver at the Mint rather than copper; the latter metal when alloyed with gold is responsible for the usual honey-gold appearance characteristic of most gold coins seen from the mid 1830s and later. A few minor tics and some scattered, faint hairlines on the obverse are mentioned for accuracy's sake. Well struck virtually everywhere including Liberty's tresses, all inscriptions, the reverse stars, the horizontal and vertical elements in the shield, and the plumage of the eagle's wing, neck, and tail. Both the obverse and reverse also show excellent centering and complete, bold border dentilation. (PCGS 8564)
