Footnotes

  • The current exhibition, Set in Style: The Jewelry of Van Cleef & Arpels,
at the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New
York, is one of the most comprehensive exhibitions ever dedicated to the
jewelry maison of Van Cleef & Arpels. As you walk through the six main
themes - innovation, transformation, nature as inspiration, personalities,
exoticism, and fashion – you are awestruck by the continuum of evolution
over the last one hundred and fifteen years that VCA has contributed to
    both design and jewelry.

The Van Cleef & Arpels pieces that appear in this catalog, reflect a
consistent devotion to form, purity, color and balance – the philosophy
of every creation of Van Cleef & Arpels. Lot 206, the emerald and
diamond necklace is thematic related by technical transformation, nature,
and fashion. Softening the rigid collars and chokers of the 1980s, VCA
designed this necklace to adorn the neckline using flower heads – inspired
by nature in contrast to the large cabochon cut stones that were popular
at this time. Creatively they also designed this necklace as a transformation
jewel, providing the client an alternative fashion statement.
For classic forms such as a diamond engagement ring, it is the adroit
master gemologist that seeks out an exceptional gem to form the
centerpiece. The magnificent marquise diamond, Lot 207, was chosen
for its brilliance, proportions, lack of color, internally flawless clarity, and
the seductive shape. The selection of this rare gem is an art that is a
synonymous trait of the prestigious Van Cleef & Arpels.

All of these creations are a visual testimony to the passion and devotion that
Van Cleef & Arpels has and continues to successfully share with the world.
