Footnotes

  • Provenance:
    With Oscar Labiner Kunsthandel, Munich;
    E.A. Titgemeyer Collection, Osnabrück, acquired from the above in 1967

    A smaller version of this dish, formerly in the Fritz Mannheimer Collection, is in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, (see Den Blaauwen 2000, cat.no. 154). The decoration is in Kakiemon style with the same densely decorated alternating lozenges, also sometimes called 'Schachbrettmuster', but the elaborated Fliegender Hund pattern is absent.

    Here it is mentioned that the model occurs in the price list of the factory in 1731, and is described as Ovale Platte Muscheln zum Confect in Form eines doppelten Blattes [Oval dish for confectionery in form of a double leaf]. The same shape and size can also be found in the Schneider Collection at Schloss Lustheim, illustrated by Shono (1973), plate 101. All these examples bear three impressed dots for the modeller Müller, and it could be assumed that the present dish was also modelled by Müller.
