Two very interesting delftware plates, circa 1750-70
Possibly Glasgow (Delftfield), painted in blue, one with a lady's high-heeled shoe and inscribed 'That's the Shoe Say's Nann Sadler', the other with a man's shoe and inscribed 'Heres the shoe the drunken butcher of Golston', within different formal panelled borders, 22.5cm and 23cm diam, drunken butcher plate marked with number 2 (one with a hairline around the cavetto and minor rim chips) (2)

  • These plates are from an apparently unrecorded series inscribed with lines from a humorous verse or song. The town of Galston was a centre for the shoe making industry in Ayrshire and some eight or ten shoe-making concerns were listed in Galston in the Ayrshire directory of 1827. Significantly, Galston is situated near Kilmarnock, roughly eighteen miles from Glasgow. It has not been possible to match these designs with any finds from excavations at Delftfield, but a Glasgow origin is certainly possible
