Footnotes

  • Frederick II of Prussia (1712-86), known as Frederick the Great, was Britain's ally during the Seven Years War (1756-63). As news of his victories reached Britain, Frederick enjoyed much popularity and his portrait is to be found on many items of the period. The portrait on this plate derives from an engraving by Richard Houston after Antoine Pesne, although most likely the delftware painter has copied a Worcester transfer print by Robert Hancock, probably dating from 1757, see Joseph Handley, 18th Century English Transfer-Printed Porcelain and Enamels (1991), pp 13-15. Rare delftware plates of this design are normally found in blue and white. Seven examples are recorded in blue, including one sold in these rooms 10 December 2003, lot 31 and the example in the Longridge Collection discussed in Leslie Grigsby's Catalogue (2000), p 87, fig D56. It is, however, exceptional to find a portrait plate painted in colours
