Footnotes

  • George II ascended to the throne in 1727. On uninscribed versions such as this, it can be difficult to determine if the monarch depicted is George I or II. Michael Archer discusses the dating of these portrait chargers in the ECC Transactions, Vol 11 (1982), p 116, plate 50f. See also Leslie Grigsby, The Longridge Collection catalogue (2000), P 80. A similar charger inscribed with initials G R, was sold in these rooms on 10 December 2003, lot 30
