Footnotes

  • Shell painting is only rarely seen on locally painted Nantgarw. Painting in similar style by Thomas Pardoe is found on Swansea earthenwares including a cabaret tray of circa 1808, illustrated by Andrew Renton, Welsh Ceramics in Context, Part I, p 123, fig 7.6 and the matching cabaret teapot and cover in the Smithsonian Institute, illustrated by WJ Grant Davidson, The Pottery of South Wales (2010), pl 91, p 238. The painting also relates to that found on an important recently discovered Coalport service painted by Pardoe at Bristol, circa 1815. A teacup, coffee cup and saucer from the service was sold in these rooms on 8 December 2008, lot 279. Shell painting is also found on the William Lewes service. Moth painting also formed part of Pardoe's repertoire. See W D John, Nantgarw Porcelain (1948), illustration 57a. See illustration 57b for a Nantgarw shell-decorated coffee can
