A Vauxhall delftware pierced basket, circa 1750-60
Of circular form, the rounded sides pierced with a band of intersecting circles, the interior painted in blue with the 'Lotus pattern', a formal lotus flower in the middle surrounded by eight tear-drop shaped panels, the footrim pierced for suspension, 25.2cm diam (broken and riveted, with other cracks and chips)

  • Provenance: Louis Lipski Collection, sold by Sotheby's 10 March 1981, lot 215. A similar basket also from the Lipski Collection is in the Victoria and Albert Museum. The Vauxhall attribution is based on excavations at Vauxhall Cross, where shards with this pattern and of pierced basket rims were found.
