Footnotes

  • Provenance:
    Royal Collections of Saxony, delivered in 1736 to the Japanese Palace, Dresden;
    Maurice de Rothschild Collection, his (anon.) sale, Christie's London, 17 October 1977, lot 63

    The list of porcelain delivered from the Dresden porcelain store to the Japanese Palace in 1736 includes: 38 St. grünglasurte kleine Suppenschalen ohne Henckel [38 green-glazed small soup bowls without handles]; quoted by Boltz 1996, p. 96. Claus Boltz has noted (op. cit., p. 116) the delay between the production of porcelain intended for the Japanese Palace, and its eventual delivery.

    The 1736 specification of Meissen porcelain ordered for the Japanese Palace, which in turn probably copies an earlier specification, includes in the room with 'celadon' porcelain, twelve various tureens on the side wall of the gallery, and 121 tureens and covers in all manner of styles on the chimney side (quoted by Cassidy-Geiger 1996, pp. 120-121).

    The 1769 inventory of the Turmzimmer in the Dresden Residence lists under no. 196 sixteen such covered bowls: Sechzehen Stück celadon Couleur glassurte Suppen-Schaalen mit Deckeln, worauf kleine Caningen sitzen, und weißen Schildern mit goldnen Rändgen eingefaßt, worinnen Blümgen gemahlt, jede 4½. Zoll hoch, 5½. ? Zoll in Diam: [sixteen celadon-coloured-glazed soup bowls with covers on which small rabbits sit, and white panels with gilt borders in which flowers are painted, each 4½ zoll high, 5½ (?) zoll in diam.]; quoted by Boltz 1996, p. 80. The 1770 inventory of the Japanese Palace includes eighteen examples listed under the same inventory number (Boltz 1996, p. 80).
