A "Barleycorn Pattern" ivory chess set,
English, circa 1850,
one side stained red, the other side left natural, the chessmen carved with decorative leaves and foliate patterns, kings topped with "turbans", queens with gadrooned knops, bishops with split mitres, knights as carved horses' heads, rooks as turrets, pawns with baluster knops and ball finials,
the king 8.8cm high, the pawn 4.7cm high.
Sold for £350 inc. premium
