A "Spassky-Fischer Escher Horsemen/Metamorphosis" silver and silver-gilt chess set,
by Cy Endfield, 1973, from an American limited edition of 325 sets,
the interlocking chessmen forming silver and silver-gilt cylinders, makers' mark "CE", hallmarks for London, 1973, in a Cy Endfield "Escher Horsemen/Metamorphosis" chess board/box, in brown leather and gilt, with the lined interior in "mushroom" suede, and the original textured card box and lid,
each cylinder 22.4cm long, the board/box 32.6cm wide, 11.1cm high (when closed).

  • Cy Endfield (1914-1995) was an American film director, inventor, magician and author, best known for his 1964 picture, "Zulu" starring Michael Caine and Stanley Baker.

    This board/box was designed and made for the American market and sold in a limited edition of only 325 sets. The Horsemen and Metamorphosis II designs to the exterior of the board/box are taken from the work of Dutch graphic artist, M. C. Escher. A similar set and board was sold by Phillips, "Chess Sets & Related Items", November 27th, 1995, lot 46.
