A Chinese Export ivory figural chess set,
Canton, 19th century,
one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings and queens as Emperor and Empress, bishops as Mandarins, knights as horsemen, rooks as elephants, pawns as Chinese infantry, together with a 19th century Cantonese Export lacquered board/box for chess and backgammon; a set of 30 early 19th century Cantonese Export pierced ivory gaming counters (stained red and left natural), and two 19th century Cantonese ivory shakers (stained red and left natural),
the king 9.5cm high, the pawn 4.9cm high, the board/box 42cm wide, the counters 3.5cm in diameter, the shakers 6.9cm high (5).
