A Chinese Export ivory "King George" chess set in a lacquered table cabinet,
Canton, early 19th century,
one side stained green, the other side left natural, the chessmen raised on circular bases carved with lotus leaves, white king as George III, white queen as Charlotte, green king as the Chinese Emperor, green queen as the Chinese Empress, bishops as mandarins with fly-whisks, knights as horsemen with spears, rooks as elephants (ridden by mahouts) bearing turrets with flags (the white rook bearing the Union Flag), pawns as foot soldiers wearing helmets (some with shields) and with spears and swords, in a Cantonese Export gilt decorated and black lacquered table cabinet, with opening doors revealing a velvet lined tray (to hold the chessmen) over two drawers with turned ivory handles (and key),
the cabinet 46.5cm wide, 26cm high, 24cm deep (2).

Footnotes

  • A very nice example of a "presentation" Chinese Export chess set and black lacquered table cabinet. The green stain found on the set is more normally associated with Indian sets, and, whilst not unknown, is far less commonly found on Chinese Export chess sets.
