A Chinese Export ivory "puzzle-ball" figural chess set,
Canton, early/mid 19th century,
one side stained red, the other side left natural, all the chessmen raised on "puzzle-ball" bases, kings in court dress, queens holding fans, bishops as mandarins holding fans, knights as horsemen, rooks as elephants bearing flags, pawns as horsemen (one puzzle-ball missing on white pawn),
the king 15.5cm high, the pawn 7.6cm high.
