A Chinese Export ivory "puzzle-ball" figural chess set,
Canton, early 19th century,
one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings as Chinese Emperors, queens as Chinese Empresses, bishops as mandarins, knights as horsemen archers, rooks as elephants with turrets, pawns as horsemen (white rooks missing flags, pawns missing swords, red bishop with cracked puzzle-ball), together with an early 19th century Cantonese Export lacquered and gilt decorated board/box for chess and backgammon (one hinge loose),
the king 16cm high, the pawn 8.5cm high, the board/box 56.5cm long (2).
