German, circa 1840,
one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings with floral galleries and petal spire finials, queens of smaller size with ball finials, bishops with ball finials, knights as horses' heads, rooks as slender turrets, pawns with ball finials, in a wooden box of rectangular form with an inlaid boxwood chess board to the lid,
the king 9cm high, the pawn 3.3cm high, the box 15cm wide.
