A "Selenus Pattern" bone chess set,
German, early/mid 19th century,
one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings with bearded faces, carved crowns, queens with carved faces and crowns, bishops with pierced galleries, knights as arched horses' heads, rooks as stepped fortresses surmounted with crescent moons, pawns with "cogged" baluster knops,
the king 13.5cm high, the pawn 6.1cm high.

  • A nice example of a 19th century German selenus chess set. The carved faces on the kings and queens, and the crescent moons on the rooks, are an unusual take on the pattern.
