Footnotes

  • Born in Herdon, Germany in 1849, Joseph-Emmanuel Zwiener established his workshop at 12, rue de la Roquette in 1880, becoming one of the premiere cabinetmakers of the late 19th century. Usually working in the French Rococo style, Zwiener's furniture is often inset with the marquetry or Vernis Martin panels and applied with delicate gilt bronze mounts. The espagnolettes on the above bureau plat are after a design by Leon Message.
