Opal in Matrix Carving of a Bear Fishing for Salmon
Opal Butte Opal Mine, Morrow County, Oregon
Located in the southwest corner of Oregon in the Blue Mountain Range, Opal Butte covers about 18,000 acres. The locality, discovered in about 1889, is still private with very little product reaching the market. Carved from a single piece, the bear rests upon a boulder formed of the dark matrix portion of the rough. The positioning of the two salmon is such that they are carved of the translucent colorless, to yellow, to bright yellowish-orange opal veins that were imbedded in the matrix, height 6 3/4in.
