• This kit was a 'Million Pound Drum Contest' competition prize run by 'Melody Maker' and Radio London, and it was presented to the winner by Dave Clark on 20th March 1966, at the Wimbledon Palais. Dave Clark used American Swiv-o-Matic stands and pedals with the kit and Avedis Zildjian cymbals: when the kit was given away, he kept this hardware and replaced it with the less expensive English Rogers catalogue option of Ajax stands and cymbals.
  
  From research information supplied, this kit appears to have been used by Dave Clark from mid-1963 to the beginning of 1966. Apart from the floor tom tom, all drums carry a serial number in the 78*** range, dating them to around August/September 1963, whilst the serial on the floor tom tom is 81001, placing it circa December 1963. There is a possible reason for this. Photographs of the band onstage in this period show floor tom toms set up at the front of the stage, which Dave would use at some point in the show. With at least four of these used by the band, it is quite likely that these were mixed up or Dave favoured the sound of one over the others.
  
  Although the twin hanging tom tom configuration had been available from some manufacturers for some time, Dave Clark's choice of this arguably popularised this set-up and other drummers added extra tom toms to their kits through the 60s.
