A musical monkey harpist automaton, by Theroude,
French, circa 1880,
The cylinder musical movement playing two airs, accompanying the seated monkey at 16-string harp with turned front pillar and gilt frame, his papier-mâché head with moving eyelids and mouth, strumming strings with painted porcelain hands, in original silk clothes, bow tied to curled wig, lace shirt and striped long coat, breaches and stockings, the movement compartment cloaked in typical red velvet, finished with gold tassal trim, key-wind to side - 19in. (48cm) high

    This automaton was purchased by Sir Henry Durrant (1838-1875) and his wife Alexandrina whilst on the Grand Tour in about 1873 for their home, Scottow Hall, in Norfolk.
    Thereafter by family decent.
