by Thomas Walker & Sons, Birmingham, serial no. 3303G. Cylindrical brass body with tow ring and flat recording instrument suspended beneath, with position adjustable for boat speed. Five recording dials, reading up to 100 miles with increments of 5 feet. 26in.(66cm)long.

Footnotes

  • Designed to record the speed of tides, or currents, and for small boat surveys. The instrument was fitted with a small, light rotator which would turn in the slightest current. Secured to a stationary boat or post, the position of the recording dials could be adjusted to ensure the instrument floated horizontally, whatever the speed of the current.
