Footnotes

  • The history of the 'sunburst' set range from PYE was a successful one, until 1948.
Fourteen models featuring the famous sunburst speaker fret were released from 1927-1937, but when the war was over, they tried to modernise this look by dropping the clouds from the design. They unwittingly incorporated the Japanese flag into the design, and when PYE realised this error, they did an immediate recall.
It is thought that up to 95% of all M78F models were bought back by PYE, their chassis removed and striped and the cases thrown in a heap to be burnt. Of the fraction that survived, most had their sunbursts covered or altered.

Here, this set has remained in the same family from new, retains the box and amazingly, the payment card showing that this was sold a month after release, but not recalled by the retailer.

A label on the box from PYE Servicing department, shows that this set made its way back to the factory in Cambridge in September 1948 for servicing, but made it back out to the customer.

At time of printing, this set is the only known green/cream M78F accompanied with all sales records and box in existence.
