A 4-inch portable brass Gregorian reflecting telescope, English, circa 1780,
unsigned but the primary mirror cast JW, the tube with star-finder mounted in parallel, focusing to the secondary mirror by screw thread and rod, supported by a double bracket above tapering column and folding tripod base, altitude and azimuth adjustment by rack and pinion and two turned lignum vitae handles, in mahogany case with two oculars and two additional secondary specula, length of tube 24in (61cm)

  • The mirror and telescope could well have been made by the optical instrument maker, Jeremiah Watkins, of 5 Charing Cross, London who operated from this address from 1798 until 1810.
