A rare and large William and Mary wooden doll, circa 1690
The painted gesso on wood face with painted brown eyes, black pupils and two white dots, brown upper lashes with short strokes, eyebrows in one line with short dashes painted above, rouged cheeks with heavily carved painted red mouth and shaped nose with defined nostrils, protruding chin with pink shading, the neck and torso in one piece of carved wood tapered at waist to rounded hips with shaped rear, having cloth padded upper arms with finely carved and painted lower arms with finely detailed spoon shaped hands, wooden-jointed at hips and knees, with shaped shins, ankles and carved toes, wearing a simple white cotton ankle-length dress with wrap around shawl, separate sewn on lace pocket, bonnet, underskirt and kid leather lining, long white cotton socks, with original crochet green slippers and red leather shoes with cream buckles, (some small flakes to gesso, tips to three fingers missing, one repaired), 71cm (28in) tall.
