Japanese Lady doll with interchangeable wigs given to Rosamund Brunel Horsley from Dr C Dresser June 24 1876 Rosamund Brunel Horley born 1864 was the niece of Isambard Kindom Brunel and daughter of John Horsley designer of the first Christmas Card and member of the Cranbrook Colony a group of leading artists of the time. The doll is a gift from Dr C Dresser who was known to tour Japan in 1876 as a guest of the Emperor who ordered that he be treated as a guest of the nation. Dresser was the first designer to travel to Japan since the re-opening of its borders in 1854 and represented the south Kensington Museum at that time. Rosamund married Francis Gotch and became a noted artist and illustrator in her own right and her childhood wax doll Cynthia is on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
