Lot 1001
THE ISAAC GUTMAN COLLECTION (Part I) Isaac Gutman started to collect toy and model soldiers around 1985. For many years he had been a lover of antiques. This love affair first started when he was 35-38 years old in Mexico City and then developed as he made some money and traveled in Spain, and to Paris and London. But it was when he became a partner in an antique shop in New York that he was introduced through the shop to some one who wanted to sell a small collection of about three hundred Imrie-Risleys, and that started the quest. In New York he met Steve Balkin and Henry Kurtz, and from both received information and help in finding and buying different models. It was through them he met a prominent Spanish collector, Jose Manuel Allendesalazar, who introduced him to the work of Palomeque and other Spanish makers. Then on another trip to Spain, he met Ramon Labayen, with whom he developed a good relationship, friendly and warm. This resulted in his assembling an important collection of the work of this master modelmaker, including some of the best models from the sale of the collection of Don Dario Loraque Perez in 1998. In that period he also started to see and buy, with total admiration, the work of Richard Courtenay and his successors, particularly Peter Greenhill. Later, he met him, and maintained a wonderful relationship for many years. Apart from these particular interests to do with Spain and the Medieval period, Isaac Gutman also acquired an iconic collection of Britains, CBG Mignot and Heyde, including items from the Forbes collection. These will appear at Bonhams, Knightsbridge in Part II of the Isaac Gutman Collection on 16th November 2011 THE FINE MEDIEVAL AND OTHER MODELS OF RICHARD COURTENAY AND HIS SUCCESSORS Bonhams are glad to acknowledge the expert assistance of Peter Greenhill, current producer of heraldic miniatures from the original Courtenay moulds, in the identification of obscure or un-named models in this section.
