Footnotes

  • The Reference 3970 was introduced to replace the successful model Reference 2499, which had been produced from 1951 to 1985. The Reference 3971 was fitted with a sapphire back but shortly after, the reference number of this model was standardised to the Reference 3970 and was offered with both types of case back. Therefore production was small and pink gold examples of the reference are extremely rare.

When the Reference 3970 and 3971 were first introduced, Patek Philippe would upon special request allow a customer to order a custom dial, such as this black dial example with diamond hour markers. The dial changes were normally after the original sale and this resulted in some interesting and extremely rare case and dial combinations. The 3970 and 3971 are now considered classic examples with rare dial combinations, highly prized by the discerning collector.
