An unusual Samuel Watson brass or bronze double sundial, English, dated 1688,
Signed on the edge of the upper plate 'Samuel Watson 1688', the square base plate, with four filled attachment holes, is engraved with an hour scale VI-XII- VI reading to 15 minutes. A second plate engraved with an hour-scale reading to five minutes is mounted, through fretted brackets, on two baluster pillars above the first plate at an angle such that the plate is at a right angle with the gnomon. There is some (? non-functional) engraving on the reverse of the plate. The gnomon is constructed in two pieces, has open-work flowing leaf decoration, and is set for the latitude of Coventry.
- Tha base plate measures 10in (25.5cm) square.
