Lot Details
A fine and rare early 18th century brass miniature lantern alarm timepiece
George Graham, London, number 583
Surmounted by a strapped bell, each strap interspersed by a pointed lobe (all but the rearmost pierced), over four urn-shaped finials and three pierced frets, the front one of which is heightened by engraved decoration of flowerheads and wheatears, on tapering columns terminating in ball feet (rear right replaced) the rectangular dial with a 4 1/8th of an inch wide chapter ring with Roman numerals, inner quarter hour track and floating lozenge half hour markers, signed in the centre of the dial Geo: Graham, London amid two foliate scrolls and an Arabic alarm setting disc, with single hour hand, the weight driven movement with verge escapement sounding the alarm on the bell with a double ended hammer 23cms (9ins) high.

Footnotes

  • George Graham began his horological training with Henry Aske, a lantern clock maker, and it is pleasing to think that, in making these travelling alarm timepieces, he was going back to his roots. Graham produced some of the finest clocks, watches and scientific instruments of the 18th century, yet he still applied his strict principles of design and quality control to this genre of timepiece.

A similar example, numbered 606, is illustrated in White; 'English Lantern Clocks', Antiques Collectors Club, 1989, Fig VII/116.
