Footnotes

  • The present piece with well proportioned body, naturalistic pose, gentle gaze and delicately painted flesh demonstrates the influence of the Spanish master Juan Martinez Montañés. His distinct realistic style had a profound effect on Spanish religious sculpture from the early 17th century onwards. Figures such as this would have been used for domestic worship as well as for religious processions.
