Footnotes

  • An identical pair of wall-appliques by Henry Dasson is illustrated in C. Mestdagh, p. 159.

This model of wall-appliques was first exhibited by Henry Dasson at the Paris Exhibition "des Beaux arts appliqués à l'industrie" in 1880. The pair was illustrated in J.B Giraud, Les arts du métal, published especially for this exhibition (see illustration).
The design of these wall-appliques derives from a Louis XIV model with two branches, one pair can be seen in the Getty Museum.

Henry Dasson (1825-1896) was one of the most celebrated Parisian bronziers and ébénistes. His business was located at 106, rue Vieille-du-Temple, Paris. His work is renowned for the fine quality of the metalwork and gilding. Specializing in the production of furniture and gilt bronzes in the styles of Louis XIV, XV and XVI, Dasson often used to copy items whilst adding his own style. Successes at the Paris various exhibitions and especially the Expositions Universelles of 1878 and 1889 brought his work into demand and he established an elite clientele on the continent, in England but also in Russia and the USA.
