    McConkey mentions Mariana, which may be the above work, and others by Lavery painted around this time on similar themes eg Waiting and Her First Disappointment. In 1880 Lavery had a studio at 101 St. Vincent St., Glasgow, next door to fellow 'Glasgow Boy' Alexander Roche, and exhibited his first pictures at the Institute that year.
