Footnotes

  • The present lot is a well known image of the King after Sir William Beechey's full-scale portrait. Bone and Grimaldi copied the portrait directly and Edridge and Cosway both painted variants.

The present lot was a gift from George IV to Dr Turton to thank him for having attended to Mrs Fitzherbert. The miniature is accompanied by a photocopy of a letter (the original now lost) from George to Dr Turton asking him to come to Carlton House to see "Mrs Fitz" who he describes as "feverish, restless & extremely hot".
