Footnotes

  • Liotard arrived in Rome during Easter 1736 and executed several portraits of the exiled Stuart family who had settled in Rome some years before. As well as versions by and after Liotard of his individual portraits of the princes, there are several known versions of the present lot, see Christie's, 14th October 1998, lot 138. An enamel version, also by Liotard, is discussed and illustrated in the exhibition catalogue Portrait Miniatures from the Collection of the Duke of Buccleuch, Edinburgh, Scottish National Portrait Gallery, 1996/1997, no. 66, p.93.

Alexander Tulloch (probably born 1703) was descended from a thirteenth-century Scottish family, which five centuries later lost property and status for supporting the Jacobites. Thomas Tulloch was one of a group of Jacobites who while wining and dining to celebrate their support for the exiled James II waved his pistol in the air to declare his enthusiasm to fight for the cause and accidentally shot himself through the head. His son-in-law Alexander Cuming of Craigmiln fought with Charles Edward Stuart at Culloden, was captured and died in prison in Carlisle in 1746.
