Mme. Chardon, née Vernisy (French, active 1800)
Claude Bénigne Paul Gouge (1804-1877) as a young boy, seated in woodland beside a birds' nest containing four eggs, holding a tiny bird in both hands and wearing beige high waisted trousers and short sleeve jacket, cream buttoned waistcoat and chemise, his dark curls cut short.
Painted on an ivory panel set into prepared card, signed on the obverse Chardon, gilded wood frame with acanthus leaf border, inscribed on the reverse Claude Bénigne/ Paul Gouge/ mon grand'pére/ née vers 1804 - 1877.
