Footnotes

  • This unique pen set has been created by dunhill from vintage barrels originally painted in the 1930's used by the Namiki artists as reference barrels for dunhill Namiki pen production. Retrieved from the dunhill archive museum they have been restored to full working order. An English artisan has crafted the caps and foreparts to compliment the Namiki barrels and 18 carat gold nibs have been added to complete these fully working pens. They are contained in a specially-commissioned fitted shagreen case.

    The dunhill-Namiki collection of pens

In 1915, Ryosuki Namiki founded a small factory near Tokyo to produce gold pen nibs. Three years later, he was joined by Masao Wada and they formed the Namiki Manufacturing Company Ltd. In 1925, they patented a process to apply lacquer to the bodies of pens to protect them from scratching and fading and a year later they introduced the ancient art of Maki-e; the technique of dusting precious metal powder onto wet lacquer (urushi).

The managing director of Alfred Dunhill's Paris branch, Clement Court, had a love for Japanese art and once introduced to Namiki's products, was so taken with them, he immediately began importing them to his store. In 1927, on a trial basis, the pieces were bought for the Paris store and sold under the brand name 'dunhill-Namiki.'
They were so popular that just three years later Clement Court and Setsuji Wada started a journey together. Starting on 30th March 1930 they travelled from Paris to Tokyo via Russia, Mongolia and Korea. This forged an even closer association between Alfred Dunhill and Namiki and resulted in an agreement giving dunhill global distribution rights for Namiki pens.

Alfred Dunhill holds an extensive archive that records Clement Court and Setsuji Wada travels together.
During the historic trip, Court made a journey to Kyoto with Matsuda and Professor Rokkaku and was able to learn a variety of Japanese art forms, including first-hand the art of maki-e.

When they arrived in Tokyo Clement Court stayed at Wada's home, a sign of great honour and respect. Court and Wada were to become lifelong friends.
