An Unusual 16-Bore Flintlock Sporting Gun
By Hugh Verncomb, Bristol, Circa 1785
With swamped rebrowned two-stage barrel with turned girdle and silver fore-sight, the octagonal breech section with refreshed signature and engraved band of beadwork at the rear, gold-lined touch-hole, border engraved flat bevelled lock with roller and stepped tail, and signed 'Vercomb' (sic) in cursive script, figured half-stock (fore-stock with minor chips and bruises), chequered grip with a dot in the centre of each diamond, finely engraved paktong mounts comprising short trigger-guard with a flower-head on the bow, trigger-plate with cast and chased finial in the form of a Chinaman wearing a large hat, butt-plate decorated on the tang with swags and an urn and with acorn finial, large escutcheon surmounted by a knotted ribbon supporting further swags and engraved with a hind's head and ducal coronet, and turned rear ramrod-pipe, three iron ramrod-pipes, horn fore-end cap, and original horn-tipped ramrod with iron worm (iron parts with some scattered minor surface pitting), Birmingham proof marks, barrelsmith's mark of Hugh Verncomb
