Footnotes

  • George Ambrose Lloyd, first Baron Lloyd (1879–1941) was appointed high commissioner for Egypt and the Sudan in 1925, remaining - deeply opposed to Egyptian independence - until he was compelled to resign in July 1929. His tour of Sudan, lasting from January and March and covering a total of over 6000 miles, set off with Lloyd travelling in a Roll's Royce, "three touring cars and the necessary baggage lorries, and an escort of the Sudan Defence Motor Machine Gun Battery under a British Bimbahsi".
