  • Apparently, presented by King Louis-Philippe at Windsor to Field Marshal Henry Hardinge, 1st Viscount Hardinge, GCB, PC ,(1785 – 1856), Commander in Chief of the Forces (1852-56) and first Governor-General of India (1844-48).

    The connection between Hardinge and Reverend Philip Stanhope Dodd was the parish of St. John the Baptist, in Penhurst in Kent; Viscount and Lady Hardinge lived within the parish, at South Park. Bagshaw's History, Gazetteer & Directory of the County of Kent, 1847 states; "Lady Hardinge, feeling for the spiritual wants of the distant parts of this parish, has recently given the munificent sum of £1,000 towards building and endowing a church or chapel there." The chapel at Fordecombe was dedicated to St Peter, Hardinge and twenty-two members of his family are buried there.
