Bagshaw's History, Gazetteer & Directory of the County of Kent, 1847 states; "Lady Hardinge, feeling for the spiritual wants of the distant parts of this parish, has recently given the munificent sum of £1,000 towards building and endowing a church or chapel there." The chapel at Fordecombe was dedicated to St Peter, Hardinge and twenty-two members of his family are buried there.
