Footnotes

  • The arms of Sir Abraham Janssen, 2nd Baronet (1748-1765) of Wimbledon.

Abraham was eldest of three brothers to inherit the baronetcy conferred on their father, Theodore, a Dutchman who came to England in 1680 where his zeal and loyalty was shown to Queen Anne and George I. Theodore Jannssen was MP for Yarmouth, knighted in 1696 and made a baronet 1714. During his 90 years the first baronet amassed a large fortune but was ruined by the South Sea Bubble, a calamity that demonstrated his own innocence in the proceedings.

The baronetcy became extinct in 1777 with the death of the 4th baronet, who served as Lord Mayor of London.
