A mid-19th century Russian vari-coloured gold, enamelled and diamond Imperial presentation box,

the cover with the monogram of Tsar Nicholas I in old brilliant and single cut diamonds on blue enamel within a frame of thirty collet-set diamonds, set on a matted ground embellished with three-colour gold roses and scrolls within an acanthus border, set with six collet-set diamonds, the sides with engine-turned panels separated by applied flower sprays and engraved scrolls, the base with a central engine-turned panel within a matted, engraved and applied floral and scroll border, length 9cm.

  • Nicholas I (6 July 1796 – 2 March 1855) was the Emperor of Russia from 1825 until 1855, known as one of the most reactionary of the Russian monarchs. On the eve of his death, the Russian Empire reached its historical zenith spanning over 20 million square kilometers (7.7 million square miles). In his capacity as the emperor he was also the King of Poland and the Grand Duke of Finland.
