A late 17th century German silver-gilt tankard,
by Michael Heckel, Augsburg, 1690 - 1695,
the cylindrical body having an outer sleeve chased and embossed with two classical vignettes of a romantic nature; one depicting a reclining and rotund gentleman listening avidly to his lady companion and the other of a spurned lover, all in a woodland setting with an engraved building in the background, the hinged and domed base decorated with spiral acanthus leaves on a matted ground, the cover applied with a small plaque with a depiction of a tree, weight 26.96oz.
