JENNER (EDWARD)
Autograph letter signed ("EJenner"), to "My dear Madam", upbraiding an over-anxious mother: "I must reprove you – Your little Boy is undoubtedly somewhat indispos'd; but it appears to me that he is at present more under the influence of artificial than natural sickness. I shall call upon you today, & you will then know whether this opinion be well or ill founded – in the meantime put aside your Antimony and give him for his dinner some good Apple Dumplings with Cream & Sugar, or any thing of the like kind", 2 pages, paper watermarked '180...', short split at fold, remains of guard at foot, outer margin a little irregular, but overall in good condition, 8vo, Chauntry Cottage (Berkeley, Gloucestershire), "Tuesday noon" [c.1800-1815]
Sold for £2,500 inc. premium

Footnotes

  • 'SOME GOOD APPLE DUMPLINGS WITH CREAM & SUGAR': the pioneer of smallpox vaccination tenders some sound medical advice. Antimony, by contrast, was used as a purgative.
