Autograph letter signed, to Hagberg Wright, of the London Library, thanking him for his help in recruiting a new servant but explaining that he need take no more trouble in the matter of the "precious lad" as an "elderly" solution may have been found, in the form of a fifty-year-old who is "zealous & accommodating & cheap -- like your poor men of letters" as well as being well-educated and civilised; autograph envelope, 2 pages, headed paper, 4to, Carlyle Mansions, 11 January 1915

  • The redoubtable Hagberg Wright was Librarian for forty-seven years and was responsible for its present building in St James's Square. James's manservant, Burgess, had enlisted in September 1914 but was invalided home the following year and eventually returned to his service.
