Footnotes

  • 'ONE OF OUR BEST LANDSCAPE PAINTERS': Sanford R. Gifford is introduced to Swinburne. Sanford Robinson Gifford, the great 'luminist' Hudson School painter, travelled to Europe that year with his fellow artist Jervis McEntee. He no doubt, as was the custom at the time, carried this letter of introduction with him to present to Swinburne upon their meeting. It seems as likely as not that the two actually did get to meet, otherwise this letter might be expected to have remained among Gifford's papers: these were presented by his heirs to the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution (the entire archive scanned on line). We can find no record of any letter by or about Gifford having appeared for sale.
