DOYLE (ARTHUR CONAN) Autograph letter signed, [c.1917-1920]
DOYLE (ARTHUR CONAN)
Autograph letter signed, to Mr Fiennes, enclosing a letter which he believes "ends the whole of our enterprise" and declaring that "We could not possibly take the responsibility of going on"; he accordingly asks a fee of 100 guineas for approximately ten days work on their project: he does however suggest that his correspondent could reissue Wilson's "Out of Her Own Mouth" with his preface, which he would be happy to expand and adapt accordingly; ending: "I must now return to my real work which is the History of the War"; enclosure no longer present, 2 pages, headed paper, file-holes and short tears to margins, lightly dust-stained, 8vo, Windlesham, Crowborough, Sussex, 14 January [1917-1920]
Sold for £500 inc. premium

Footnotes

  • H.W. Wilson's Convicted Out of Her Own Mouth: The Record of German Crimes was published in 1917. Conan Doyle's suggestion that it be reissued, with the preface he had written for Fiennes tailored to fit, seems to have come to nothing; his history of the war appeared in parts year by year as The British Campaign in France and Flanders, beginning in 1915, the collected edition appearing in 1920.
